In 2011, the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) announced the creation of a fall half marathon, a new race that was created to promote healthy lifestyles in the local community and to enhance Louisville’s reputation as a vibrant recreation destination. In 2013, the LSC added two additional fall races – the Louisville pure tap 5K® and Norton Sports Health Great Pumpkin 10K – to create the Fall Runathon.

In 2014, the half marathon was rebranded the Urban Bourbon Half Marathon with a 13.1-mile course that pours through the settings that make Louisville unique – starting at the historic Whiskey Row, and finishing on Main Street, showcasing 200 years of bourbon heritage and culture in Louisville.
